kandi kid subculture history
The rave and EDM scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s sparked the culture of "Kandi Kids", named for the bead bracelets (“kandi”) they made and wore. Kandi bracelets are made usually of plastic pony beads and stretchy elastic, but can also include charms, other kinds of beads, and symbols/characters made from perler beads (see bottom of page for my perler collection :3). Kandi was traded as symbols of connection and friendship, representing the kandi motto "PLUR" (Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect).
Kandi Kid culture has grown into a subculture that has expanded outside the rave scene - through MySpace, Tumblr, and later TikTok and Neocities, kandi culture has blended rave roots with fandoms, cartoons, internet nostalgia, and queer expression.
When trading Kandi, many kandi kids use a special "PLUR" handshake - both people forming a peace sign to represent Peace, then a heart shape for Love, then interlocking fingers for Unity, ending in one person sliding the bracelet they are trading from their arm onto the other’s wrist while holding hands for Respect, and often the other person will do the same to trade from their own arm (though the kandi kid culture emphasizes trading without expecting anything in return, of course).
